CASE76 · Power plants · Parallel pumps / VFD / Condenser
Coordinating pump count, speed, flow and pressure in a power plant
A large parallel-pump inventory is analyzed with seven generating units. Pump dispatch is evaluated against feedwater requirements, condenser performance and total auxiliary electricity.
01 · CASE ANALYSIS
Define the actual configuration
The source records 14 feedwater pumps, typically seven running with variable-speed control; 14 condensate pumps, typically seven running; and 17 seawater pumps, approximately seven to fourteen running.
Seven variable-speed forced-draft fans and seven variable-speed induced-draft fans were also linked to generating-unit operating information.
02 · CASE ANALYSIS
Compare operating combinations
Pump count and speed influence flow, head and efficiency together. The useful operating point is the intersection of pump and system performance, not the sum of nameplate flows.
Measure the flow gained and electricity added when another parallel pump is started. Include valve position, recirculation and minimum-flow protection.
| Equipment | Installed | Source operating configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Feedwater pumps | 14 | Typically 7 running; variable speed |
| Condensate pumps | 14 | Typically 7 running |
| Seawater pumps | 17 | Approximately 7–14 running |
| FDF / IDF | 7 each | Variable speed; linked to 7 generating units |
03 · CASE ANALYSIS
Treat seawater pumps and the condenser jointly
Reducing seawater-pump electricity can worsen condenser vacuum and generating performance. Evaluate pump kW against the change in net generation under comparable seawater temperature and load.
Feedwater stability, suction margin, manufacturer operating region, redundancy and starting constraints define feasible combinations.
04 · CASE ANALYSIS
Turn diagnosis into a dispatch trial
Construct measured combination maps and test staging with hysteresis and minimum run time. Keep existing protection and local controls active.
The source confirms inventory and optimization directions; it does not report a separate final savings percentage attributable solely to CASE76 pump-count optimization.
| Constraint | Check |
|---|---|
| Flow and head | Required process service |
| Minimum flow / suction / vibration | Stable pump operation |
| Condenser vacuum | Net-generation trade-off |
| Redundancy and transitions | Feasible count changes |
