CASE75 · Power plants · Auxiliary-power benchmarking

Benchmarking seven generating units to prioritize auxiliary-power improvements

A by-product-gas power plant compares auxiliary electricity relative to generation. Unit-level differences identify where pump and fan investigation should begin.

01 · CASE ANALYSIS

Normalize by the service delivered

Seven generating units were compared using auxiliary-power ratio and feedwater, condensate, seawater-pump and FDF/IDF operating data. Absolute kW alone is unsuitable when generating output differs.

Auxiliary-power ratio is auxiliary electricity divided by gross generation, multiplied by 100, under a consistent metering boundary.

02 · CASE ANALYSIS

Distinguish benchmark gaps and targets

Reported unit ratios were approximately 3.2–4.3%, with a maximum relative gap of approximately 34% against a better unit. This is a performance difference, not an achieved saving.

The source describes approximately 28 MW of major auxiliary equipment and annual electricity cost of KRW 23.1 billion. The proposed target was approximately 2%, or KRW 460 million/year.

03 · CASE ANALYSIS

Investigate pumps and fans at matched load

Compare generating load, steam conditions, cooling-water conditions, pump flow/head, valve position and fan draft control. Check whether the peer difference reflects controls, equipment condition or a boundary mismatch.

Variable speed, setpoint and staging opportunities must maintain boiler feedwater, condenser conditions, combustion and generating reliability.

04 · CASE ANALYSIS

Prioritize and verify improvements

Rank opportunities by energy gap, controllability, reliability, investment and measurability. Trial one bounded change and verify its effect at comparable generating conditions.

CASE75 provides field benchmarking and a proposal target. It does not establish a final 2% implemented plant saving.
