CASE71 · Data centers · EC fan retrofit
Evaluating EC fans as a data-center cooling retrofit alternative
A multi-site cooling diagnosis evaluates electronically commutated fans as a retrofit option. Fan selection, control integration and operating economics are treated together.
01 · CASE ANALYSIS
The decision is a retrofit comparison
The source evaluates EC fan adoption as an improvement alternative following data-center diagnosis. It does not confirm an independently completed CASE71 retrofit result.
Compare the existing AC induction motor and variable-speed arrangement with the proposed integrated EC motor/controller under the same required airflow and pressure.
02 · CASE ANALYSIS
Build the operating inventory
Record fan quantity, size, input power, speed, running hours, airflow, filter resistance and cooling-unit state. Nameplate motor efficiency alone does not represent the full operating system.
Identify whether unnecessary airflow or fan-only operation can first be corrected through the existing sequence.
| Existing / proposed item | Evaluation basis |
|---|---|
| AC motor + drive / integrated EC fan | Measured system input power |
| Fan geometry and static pressure | Airflow at the required operating point |
| BMS and local controller | Speed command, alarms and fallback |
| Investment and hours | Scenario economics; pilot verification |
03 · CASE ANALYSIS
Compare feasible equipment and controls
Check physical fit, electrical supply, control interface, fan-array redundancy, alarms, maintainability and the operating envelope. Lower power must still deliver required rack cooling.
Speed affinity relationships provide a theoretical direction. Actual savings require measured fan performance and system resistance, not a direct cube-law percentage.
04 · CASE ANALYSIS
Select and verify a pilot
Develop CAPEX, annual kWh and maintenance scenarios from the operating-hour distribution. Use a pilot to confirm airflow, thermal service, acoustics and measured input power.
Do not transfer the 63.5% pilot result described in related CASE38/46 to CASE71 as an independent achieved result.
| Check | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Rack temperatures and humidity | Confirm cooling service |
| Matched airflow / pressure | Make the power comparison fair |
| Redundancy and maintenance | Confirm operational feasibility |
| Metered kWh and hours | Establish an attributable result |
